Book Synopsis: Foiled
(One-line): In 1947, two Roswell children obtain a piece of alien technology and find themselves on the run from the Military Police and the CIA.

(300 words):

Eleven-year-old Kate lives with her mother on the U.S. Army base near Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947. One night, Kate’s friend, Billy, shows her strange pieces of foil. Later that night, CIA agent Falco arrives at Billy’s house demanding the return of the foil, and informs his family of their reassignment to Germany. Billy, not wanting to move to Germany or return his treasures, begs Kate for help and she agrees to. Using their wits, knowledge of the base, and sheer determination, they evade capture, but not before Falco makes a death threat against Kate’s family.

Once off base, Kate calls to warn her mother and is determined to warn her grandfather too, since he doesn’t have a telephone. She and Billy strike off to reach him, more than two hundred miles away. Along the way, they learn the foil allows you to read a person’s thoughts.

Thus begins a most unusual road trip where Kate battles with her conscious as they among other things accidentally blow up a gas station and steal a car. The next day, after traveling by river, the two exhausted friends arrive at Kate’s grandfather’s house only to find him missing.

Kate crosses the line when she subdues an armed deputy and they escape a trap by taking off in Grandpa Clyde’s light aircraft under gunfire from Falco. Kate must say goodbye to a homesick Billy, and Grandpa Clyde suffers a stroke after an aerial dogfight, leaving her to make a crash landing in a nearby town.

Injured, Grandpa Clyde orders Kate to leave him behind and sneak away to seek help from a trusted friend. Days later, Grandpa Clyde is released from the hospital and he secretly joins Kate on the man’s ranch. They decide to live there until her mother resigns her commission from the Army, allowing them to start a new life beyond the tendrils of Falco and the CIA.

(600 words):

Eleven-year-old Kate lives with her mother on the U.S. Army base near Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947. One night, just as Kate’s friend, Billy, shows her strange pieces of foil that his dad retrieved from the wreckage of what may have been an alien spacecraft, CIA agent Falco arrives at Billy’s house and informs his family of their sudden reassignment to Germany. The agent demands the return of the foil. Billy, not wanting to move to Germany or return his treasures, begs Kate for help. Quick thinking and loyal, Kate agrees to help hide him.

A moment later, Kate slips Falco’s grip while climbing out through Billy’s bedroom window and the two friends escape down into a storm drain tunnel, but not before Falco makes a death threat on Kate’s family. Using their wits, their knowledge of the area, and sheer determination they evade capture and sneak off base.

Terrified of Falco’s threat, Kate calls from a gas station on the outskirts of Roswell, to warn her mother. Disobeying her mother’s orders, Kate is determined to warn her grandfather too, since his has no telephone. Together, she and Billy strike off to reach him, more than two hundred miles away. A short time later, while holding the foil, Kate is able to read Billy’s thoughts.

A little while later, around midnight, they accidentally blow up a gas station while sneaking a ride in the bed of a pick-up truck delivering boxes of pecans. An hour later, Kate wakes up and discovers the truck’s heading in the wrong direction. To stop the truck so they can bail out, they dump a couple boxes of pecans across the highway. A short time after, they hitchhike a ride from a Good Samaritan and then steal his car and drive it on a winding mountain road with only one headlight.

Around dawn, they pull into an all-night diner and Kate uses the ‘magic foil’ to blackmail a State Trooper so they can slip away from Falco and the police. Before long, they abandon an eighteen-wheeler to avoid a roadblock and steal a leaky boat to travel down the Rio Grande.

Some time after noon, they paddle ashore and have a close encounter with a rattlesnake just before arriving exhausted, at Kate’s grandfather’s house only to find him missing.

Things go from bad to worse when Kate pulls a loaded rifle on a deputy to disarm him so they can escape with Grandpa Clyde in his over-loaded light aircraft. During a refueling stop, they avoid a trap and takeoff under gunfire from Falco.

They take refuge overnight on an Indian reservation with an old friend of Grandpa Clyde. The next morning the jewelry maker surprises Kate with a special gift—a necklace that hides the foil.

The next morning, after dropping off a homesick Billy at a nearby airport, Kate and Grandpa Clyde are intercepted by an Army helicopter. Although they win an aerial dogfight, Grandpa Clyde suffers a stroke and Kate takes over flying the airplane and makes a crash landing in a nearby town. Too injured to move, Grandpa Clyde sends Kate away to seek refuge from a trusted friend who runs a ranch on the other side of the mountain.

A few days later, when released from the hospital, Grandpa Clyde secretly joins Kate on the ranch where they decide to remain living until her mother finds a civilian job so she can resign her commission from the Army, allowing them to start a new life beyond the tendrils of Falco and the CIA.
